SECOND PARTICIPATORY LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (PLDP-II)

Success in implementing the project PLDP I inspired PKSF to implementing ADB assisted Second Participatory Livestock Development Project (PLDP-II) for providing the poor with financial and technical supports in the livestock sector. The project is being implemented in 157 sub-districts of 20 districts (16 districts in Rajshahi Division and 4 districts of Dhaka Division) in the northwest and central north part of the country. A total of 15 POs are implementing the project targeting about 660,000 households who are landless, small & marginal farmers and farmers of flood/river eroded project areas. The six-year project, FY 2005-10, focuses on reducing poverty of the target poor by promoting IGAs and employment generation. The project particularly addresses gender aspects of poverty among the target rural population. The project supports households with their asset creation, management of enterprises mostly in livestock activities, marketing of livestock products, and input supply services.

As of 30 June 2009, 106 Area Office have been established, a total of 552,051 beneficiaries have been enrolled, and 370,975 of them have been given training and are engaged in different livestock related ventures under the project. Types of training included Dairy Entrepreneurship Development, Milk Collection & Handling, Milk Processing, Veterinary Pharmacy Owner and Mini-hatchery. In order to facilitate market development and marketing activities, PKSF and PLDP II signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Milk Vita to ensure fair price of milk produced by the project beneficiaries.

In FY 2009, PLDP II disbursed BDT 0.73 Billion to POs which grew by 22% from FY 2008. Loan disbursement by POs stand at BDT 0.37 Billion which is about 2% higher than that of last FY. The loan outstanding stood at BDT 1.31 Billion for PKSF and BDT 2.04 Billion for POs at the end of June 2009. The FY average loan size was BDT 10,603, which grew by 7.7% from last FY.
